Our Team - In-House

Wendy

Wendy Welton, president and lead architect/designer, started her professional education at the Boston Architectural College, then transferred to Pratt Institute in New York to complete her professional degree. She has been working in the field of architect since 1986, obtained her degee in 1994 and was first licensed in 1999.

Art Form Architecture was first established in 2000 and incorporated in 2001, in New Hampshire.

Holly

Holly Ciampa is Wendy's assistant. Holly has an Associates Degree from the University of New Hampshire in Architectural Technology, and an Associates Degree in Interior Design from Hesser College. Holly does most of our in-house drafting, keeps track of Wendy and facilitates most of the billing, both receivables and payables. You might also see her manning the booth at a home show.

Janice

Janice Defilippo backs Holly up with the administration, and crawls under the desk when a computer is misbehaving. Janice, and sometimes her daughter Marina, also work the home shows with Wendy.

Our Team - Consultants

The following are independent consultants as well as Artform Team Members. If you feel you need their services, but not ours, feel free to contact them to discuss your needs.

Joe

Joe Allwarden at The Maguire Group, of Foxborough, MA and Portsmouth, NH does the vast majority of our structural engineering. Joe and his colleagues have Professional Engineer licensing in New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Joey

Joey Martin provides green/sustainable services, like preparation for Leed, Energy Star & National Green Building Standard project certification.

Joey is a Certified Green Professional with the NAHB (National Association of Home Builders), and teaches the Certified Green Professionals course for the NAHB University of Housing, and the Indiana Builders Association Housing University. His focus is using the National Green Building Program to best balance the homeowner's comfort, green goals and their available budget.

Buck

Buck Taylor, with Roltay Inc. provides green/sustainable services with a special emphasis on technology, like geothermal and solar. Buck has been building, studying and teaching sustainable construction since 1988.

Allen, Jesse, Mike & Gary

We began developing an extended network of drafters and consultants as part of Artform Home Plans, our stock home plans group. Allen Colburn, Jesse Ware & Mike Iacono are former builders who are skilled using our software, and who we've trained to follow our system and meet our standards. Gary Doski is a former builder, a building inspector, AIBD Certified Professional Building Designer and certified Chief Architect® trainer. He provides training for our team and also works on some projects directly.

Address & Directions

Our address is 580 Greenland Road, Portsmouth, NH, 03801. If you're coming here (by appointment please), it will look like just a house (because it is - Wendy's living light on the planet). We're legal to have a sign, but we're not putting one up until we do some landscaping, and landscaping is in line in the budget behind other more important things. See, we have to make the same priority decisions you do! Anyway - if you're coming see us here at the studio:

From Massachusetts or south of Portsmouth or NH Route 101 (Epping and beyond):

  • I95 North - start paying attention after the tolls

From Maine, or NH Route 4 (Dover, Durham and beyond):

  • I95 South - start paying attention when you cross the big high bridge into NH (or immediately when you get on 95)

Then - both:

  • NH Exit 3
  • Take a right at the end of the exit ramp - towards Portsmouth. It's Greenland Road, but don't go towards Greenland, go towards Portsmouth. PS - Greenland Road is Rt 33 if you're looking at a map.
  • From I95 Northbound, drive 0.3 (1/3) mile. From I95 Southbound, drive 0.9 mile. Do not hit the gas!
  • We're on the right - it says 580 & Welton on the mailbox - we're the last house on the right where the road is still two lanes in your direction of travel. We are the merge. Just drive your car in the right hand lane and stay there. If you get to a Y in the road, single lane travel or a big cemetery, you put your foot on the gas, didn't you?

Yes, GPS devices seem to find us accurately. Garmin seems to want people to get off on Route 1 before the 95/128 split. Just ignore it - stay on I95. The GPS will add 1 whole minute to the arrival time, but you'll avoid 10 extra minutes or more of stop-and-go traffic and traffic lights.

Now you know why Wendy bought this house. It needed a ton of work, but for going on Away Missions and people coming here from out of town, you just can't beat the location.

The Bigger Village

It takes a village to raise a business. We're happy to recommend the following, who provide the support that lets Wendy pay attention to your design.

Web Site / Marketing

Lee Knoch at Steele Marketing LLC. Lee has provided our web support since the beginning. This web site is 99% updatable by me. I can add projects, add pages, change pictures, change text... by myself, whenever I want. The attributions and testimonials are fill-in fields, creating both current testimonials and a built-in referral network through cross attributions. We developed it with Lee as part of a group project (four builders joined me in this effort). It's available as a semi-custom template from Lee at affordable rates.

Business Coach

Paul McAskill of The Compass Points provides the guidance Wendy needs. Frank Gehry is a very famous architect, who credits most of his success to the ongoing guidance of his business coach. It's a very hard thing to ask people who depend on you for all or part of their income to tell you the truth. That's Paul's job - he tells it like it is. A good business coach is just like a sports coach - part cheerleader, part strategist, even part therapist... - but above all, that person you can count on to help you see reality.

Accounting

Ray Jeffs provides both traditional accounting (tax forms), QuickBooks support and training, and financial guidance. It took us 4 tries to find someone who would meet all our needs. We'd watch those people on TV who's accountant advised them to do this or that. But here in our little world we'd have a box drawn around what the accountant does, with too many things left for us to figure out. Then we found Ray. Now Wendy can do what she does.

Legal

We found it wise to have both general business legal support and industry specific support.

Tim Coughlin and Ken Murphy at Coughlin, Rainboth, Murphy & Lown take care of our NH business legal needs. They're an approachable old-style firm who will take care of your needs without making mountains out of mole hills.

Jack McDonnell at Donovan Hatem LLP provides Massachusetts legal support, like contract review, and advises us on issues specific to architecture and construction. Donovan Hatem has the industry specific expertise in construction, architecture, and intellectual property law that we needed.

Computers

Steve McFarland at Tech-n-Go makes fighting IP addresses stop fighting and solves other snarly computer problems. They also built our last two computers. We got better hardware, with a year of on-site support, without bloatware, at less than we would have paid for the "special" at the big box place - installed! There are a lot of self taught computer "experts" out there. In our experience, Steve is the real deal.
