Sylvan Walk

This house was an ugly duckling in a gorgeous setting.  A lot of house doctoring, some careful design, and the homeowners' grit and determination made it into a warm and welcoming home.

One of our the design moves was to add these natural wood heavy timber pieces. They gave these spaces a more human scale while maintaining the soaring ceilings.

The home is a split level and the "entry" at a stair landing just didn't do it for the new homeowners. At the same time, they didn't want to lose the light from the kitchen, as they assumed they would if we added a foyer in the logical spot. Wendy proposed keeping the window and grabbing the light and the view right through the foyer. That's the window to the kitchen on the right in this photo.

The kitchen "before" shows how too much space can just feel empty. This was taken during our first design session. That's the monster laptop on the right by the window.
